I would dismantle most of the campaign finance "reforms" and other limitations on free speech.

1. There is no logical reason to limit donations. Open donations to any person, party, for any amount. But it must be reported immediately on the web. That way, people know exactly who's supporting the candidate, and they do not have to spend excessive amounts of time raising money at $2K a plate dinners. I'd rather have the president on the job than on the circuit. (I do not advocate allowing foreign financing, however.)

2. Let anybody run any type of ad, whether for or against for whatever reason. This is the true spirit of free speech that the McCain-Feingold quashed. But all ads must distinctly note who paid for them.

3. No more preventing non-profits from being part of the process. Real freedom of speech includes churches and charities, the NAACP and the NRA. Why should they be forced into silence? That's just wrong.

Let's make political speech free again!

I would eliminate the electoral college.

The electoral college was put in to make it farer for sparcely populated states to have a say in the election. Today with mass communication I do not believe rural states are at the disadvantage they once were. I also believe in voting on Saturday or Sunday as opposed to Tuesday. Most people have weekends off and so that would be great. Or we could have a national holiday. Those not wishing to vote whould have to work.

I do not favor incentives like a ticket towrd winning a new car or something to get people to vote. They need to have a stake in the process and not do it just to have a chance at some big prize.

I really wish I could knock some sense into people so they would realize something.
Your LOCAL elections are more important. Those are the people who become governors , representatives etc.. eventually.
Rarely, with the exception of celebrities does someone hop right into a national level election.
If you help put into place people you believe represent you, on a local level, eventually the system will be changed on the national level.

That being said I do think the electoral college is an antiquity that we can do away with.

And I have no party affiliation but im a moderate conservative.

Require everyone to take a test to prove they have educated themselves on the issues and what the candidates stand on those issues are. Too many people vote for so-and-so because "he/she has nice hair", "my dad always voted for this party", "he/she looks like a nice man/woman", and a thousand other reasons other than they believe the candidate will do the best job.

And I have no party affiliation, so I can't answer that part. I vote for the candidate, not the party.

I'm independent. I would eliminate the electoral college. The candidate that receives the majority of the popular vote should be declared the winner. Case in point - the 2000 election.

The length of time that they can run their campaigns. Here it is the beginning of 2007 and the election isn't until 2008. Like do we have to put up with all this crap for almost 2 years ahead of time. Make the election in September of 2008 and they can begin to campaign in the month of March in 2008 that means they have 6 months to stand on their platform for election. 2 years is too long to go!

I'm a Democrat, and I would change the technical methods of voting so they were uniform all over the country and so they were reliable enough so that every American felt like his or her vote counted.

If I could have a second thing, I would mandate public funding for all candidates and have TV ad time offered for free equally to each candidate.

Only one term of 6 years for president. That would put an end to the endless campaigning every three (getting closer to two) years.
I am an Independent.

If I could change one thing it would be to remove the electoral colege. The President should be truly elected by the PEOPLE! ( D )

I wouldn't discard the electoral college as some here would, because without it, states like Rhode Island and Alaska would have no say. I would change the EC so that a candidate who wins a Congressional district, s/he wins 1 EV. The one who wins statewide gets the additional 2 EVs. I would eliminate the EC itself because it is meaningless and unnecessary.
