Funny, because I am in the middle of cleaning my carpets. First thing is that the cleaner needs to spray hot water and soap on the carpet, then it needs to scrub it into the carpet. This usually happens when you move the cleaner up, then when you pull it back, it sucks up most of the water and dirt.
What I have found, you need to run the carpet cleaner over one area a few times. I have done this several times and still don't get clean water in the recieving tank, but I find if I have really bad spots, to get a scrub brush, and put some water and soap on those spots and scrub by hand, then use the cleaner to clean it up. Also, you can use the vacuum portion of the cleaner without spraying water to suck up as much water as you can, however, you won't make it completely dry.
I hope this helps.
The chemicals I use is pretty much soap and water. It is pretty much like a washing machine, you add the water and soap and agitate the carpet yourself.
