Sure could. Is it louder when you turn one direction but not the other? If so than that is the problem. If it gets louder when you turn right it's the left wheel, and left turns is the right wheel. The extra wieght from the turn puts more pressure on the faulty tire. Pretty dangerous. The wheel could come off over time.

It sounds alot like the mechanic knows his stuff. The wheel bearing is the likely culprit.
Wheel bearings aren't drastically expensive, though to do the job yourself you'll need to take the hub into a shop to have the old bearings pressed out and the new bearings pressed in.
It's not like the old days when bearings almost fell out of the hub with some careful tapping.
Have the work done at a professional alignment shop, since they do that kind of thing all day long, they'll do it in less time and charge accordingly.

Dear ford motor; Usually the loud and irritating noise is the front wheel bearings. This is most common in these types of vehicles.
300.00 dollars is a lot if you know how to replace the bearings yourself; if not then I guess it is okay to pay that amount.

It probably is the wheel bearings - sounds like it. It could be the sound of a teenage boy, though. Try gagging him and see if it still makes the gosh aweful sound. Seriously though, it really does sound like the wheel bearings from what you described.

put the front end on jack stands and start the car and put it in drive. You should hear the noise when the wheels start moving. Then step on the brakes. If the noise stops, then it is most likely the bearings

If the Mechanic says its the wheel bearings then thats what it is. Doesnt sound like anything else. Thats what you get for buying a Taurus in the first place. They are junk.

It certainly sounds like it could be your wheel bearing.
If you're unsure of your mechanic's integrity, get another opinion.
Do it soon, it can get more expensive.
Good luck,

Yes, it could be and most likely is. That is a common ailment on the Taurus (my dad's went as well), and if a mechanic told you that's what it is, I'd believe him. Sorry.
