Briefly, it's because the earliest traces of farming and cities are found there. Farming allows for an increase in population density, and cities are artifacts of propulation density. The word "civilization" shares a root with "city." (http://www.etymonline.com/)
The Sumerian civilization was one of the earliest, and you can find out about the great early cities and economic systems of Iraq - where Sumeria was located - at sites like Washing State Univ/Richard Hooker course website: http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/110/110SCHED.HTM.

Mesopotamia is the site of the first known civilization, Sumeria. This does play an important role with many of the major religions, i.e. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, because this civilization was more advanced than even the Mayans, Aztecs, Incans, or by comparisan, our own civilization. Thus the fall of man from the garden (or however other religions dictate it). The Garden of Eden in an earthly presence would have been located in the same area as Mesopotamia, thus the reasoning for the area being so fertile, thus the "Fertile Cresent." What has been discovered of man before the Sumerian civilization shows hardly any technology or any signs of culture or civilization at all. Due to the fact that Sumer appears so abruptly in history as it does, which is still a mystery within itself, it created the first civilization. This civilization laid the foundation for every civilization that followed. Thus, the "Cradle of Civilization." Human life isn't believed to have began here, whether you want to follow a religious path or the theory of evolution. Just civilization is believed to have started here. I hope it helps.

Mesopotamia is the place where many fossil records have been uncovered that shows Mesopotamia to be the oldest known organized civilization. There is much debate about what comprises a civilization. A civilization is a society in which there is a government, law, religion, culture and customs.
