Your friend must be kidding when he says that he is in possession of a Samurai. The Japanese Governemnt would love to take back the Sword, if it is authentic.

Swords and other memorabilia from Japan in the Second World War were usually family heirlooms they didn't belong to the Government a samurai were were mostly freelance soldiers.

The Government of Japan might be able to help you find the family whose son or husband carried that sword. Go to the nearest embassy or consulate and ask for their help. To the Japanese this would be like the US getting back a memento of the war.

Good luck.

Don't know where you are, but the easiest way to make contact is via your local Japanese embassy.

In the USA this at 2520 Massachusetts Avenue N.W., Washington D.C., 20008-2869, U.S.A. Tel: (1-202) 238-6700 Fax: (1-202) 328-2187.

In the UK this is at 101-104, Piccadilly, London, W1J 7JT, U.K. Tel:(44-20)7465-6500 Fax:(44-20)7491-9348.

Hope this helps.

I can't think of why the Japanese government would want it back. I know all Japanese Army Officers had one, I'm not sure about the other branches of the service, so they're pretty common.
