I hate blood tests as well but have had to get wayyyyyyyy too many. The nurse may not be sensitive to nervous patients. You'll have to say something. I mention it EVERY time. Also, ask the nurse to use either the black needle or the butterfly needle. The butterfly needle is the best and I swear (as a fellow-needle phobe) it'll just be a little pinch.
I would recommend not looking and taking deep breaths throughout as well. Bring some water with you and some saltines--it might help you afterwards if you feel dizzy or nauseous.

You'll be fine...honestly, don't worry. I have had countless blood tests. The nurse will be used to doing them and the most you feel is a pin prick. Do tell the nurse how nervous you are and she'll take extra care to make sure you are at ease.
I do sympathise because my son has a blood phobia and passes out or feels faint if he sees it or even if people talk about it!
The nurse will put a band around your upper arm and ask you to squeeze your fist a few times, she'll clean the area with a wipe and then the pin prick...the blood coming out...you cannot feel at all. It really doesn't take 2 minutes.
It's good that you are going through with it. They can determine so much from a simple blood test.
Good luck, you'll be okay.

The nurse will be used to nervous patients, they'll know what to do. Just look away and take a deep breath.
*Also, this may or may not help, but my sister is a nurse, and she says she can make blood drawing as gentle or as painful as she wants. Of course it would be highly unethical to make a blood drawing more painful than it has to be, but... just be nice to your nurse. That's all I'm saying.

Of course the nurse will be used to nervous patients..how many of us actually enjoy getting our blood taken? :-)
Just look away and don't watch while they do it. Look away as soon as you sit down..look at things on the wall, sing a song in your head, do whatever it takes to "zone out" while they are doing the test. You probably won't even notice them sticking in the needle.

Yes. A lot of patients really don't like it. Come to think of it, unless they are turned on by pain, blood, and needles, most people don't like it.
The biggest thing is to turn your head away so you can't watch it being done. And tell the person who is drawing the blood that you don't like having your blood drawn. They will talk to you about it, and make you more confortable.
Relax. It's really a simple thing.

Tell the nurse how scared you are. It only takes seconds to draw the blood and hardly feel it. Look away and focus on something in the room. Good luck, don't worry, the nurse will understand. X

Oh goodness they are so used to it. Me, I love getting my blood drawn. I am so used to it. But you really have nothing to worry about. They do it everyday and everynight, many times a day.
Just really imagine that you just cut yourself on the arm or hand wherever they get it from. And she is trying to repair it for you. Really if you want to know the truth, the most painfull thing is taking off the tape! Thats what I hate the most!!
Good Luck :)

One thing that increases the stinging of shots, is when the tech doesnt let the alcohol dry all the way before sticking the needle in (you get alcohol on the needle) Maybe mention this.

believe me it is not that bad (even coming from a person who shakes at the doctor/dentist and once kicked a dr. when she was administering a shot.) They will be used to all kinds of patients most of them nervous, they have to deal with screaming babies and screaming adults. Don't worry the nurse will know what she is doing. :)

My sister hates 1) having her blood drawn and 2) visiting the dentist. She has found something that works for her. She takes along a little teddy bear with her and holds it while getting the procedures done. This has really helped her. One of her co-workers who also hates the dentist even asked to borrow the bear, and said that it helped her a lot when she went. Try taking something along that is soft to hold. Or have someone with you to hold your hand, if possible. :-)
