I think it was written by Irwin Shaw. Maybe Leon Uris. There is something I have always wondered about. Alfred Eaton was so driven to succeed and one point, observed that he didn't want to be one of those idle, rich people "who drive cars from one place to another" for their friends. Yet when he left his wife for his mistress, that is exactly what he turned into. I have never understood why he did that? It didn't seem to jive with the theme of the novel. What have I misunderstood? Literature teachers, welcome!

It's been a while since I read it, but I think the idea is that he made a mistake--he didn't know it would turn out that way, and it's part of the downfall of his character. The novel is by Shaw, by the way.
