Barbara Walters has been in the business for many, many years, so she definitely deserves to be respected. Also, she was the first woman in many instances in her career, for example, she was the first female co-host of The Today Show. She set the groundwork for many women in broadcast. She had to put up with lots of the stereotypes women were given back when it was a man's industry. Because of all this, Barbara is a very respected anchorwoman.
As for why people love her....I think people can connect with her through her interviews. She's been known to make many of her guests cry by asking them touchy questions, which takes guts! She's never afraid to ask questions that other journalists would keep mum about. I think that attribute is appealing to audiences, because those questions are the things audiences really want answered. I also think that the jokes made at her expense (especially with the way she talks) have actually worked in her favor. I myself didn't know who Barbara Walters was (I was young, but still....), but after hearing a few Baba Wawa jokes and learning who she was, it made me much more likely to watch her on tv. You're much more likely to watch someone you've heard about, if even through a joke, than someone you've never heard of before, in many cases.
Hope this helps! Even if you don't love or even like Barbara Walters, at least respect her for all that she has done!

Like other answerers, I think it runs to her area of expertise and her historic place in journalism. Another reason could be her demeanor...she doesn't come off as someone who wants to get 'the dirt'. She shows tremendous respect to her guests, and she is a journalist - not a media pig. She has interviewed some of the greatest world leaders, and many in places where women had absolutely no voice.
Her role at The View brings her under different scrutiny...and places her in the same pathetic boat as Rosie O'Donnell. That may change her standing in the journalistic community as time goes on.

Because she was the first woman news anchor. She broke many stereotypes and myths about women in professional positions. She remains to be one of the most poised women in broadcasting. (pardon the pun!)
