In Germany in the middle ages. Copper is kupfer. The reason it is called "nickel" in English and German is that it was called "kupfernickel," "The Devil's Copper," by the miners. Wherever nickel occurred with copper, it was "devilishly" difficult to separate from the copper. A popular name for the devil is "Old Nick."
