You could obtain a visa upon arrival in Vietnam, but it could end up being a hassle that is resolved by paying off the officer approving your entry into the country (that recently happened to some friends of mine).
Any Vietnam embassy or consulate can issue a visa. If you're in Ireland, you can obtain more information at the following Web site:
http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk
It's easiest to let a travel agency take care of the visa for you. Make sure the agency has a history of booking travel to Vietnam.
If you intend to stay for more then 30 days, then you will need to extend your visa. DO NOT go to the government offices to get this done because they will jerk you around. Use a travel agency or tourist service center for this.
Have fun!

Hi, if there is no VN Embassy in your town just visit one of the tour operator www.itt.com.vn or other tour operator like Transviet. Some times they can arrange visa upon arrival. Will you visit only Vietnam or other country also.
Good to know:
aa. Make sure you ask for single or multiple entry visa .
eg: SINGAPORE - HANOI - SIEM REP (Cambodia) - HO CHI MINH -SINGAPORE = than you might need multiple entry visa.
bb. Make sure that your name on paper ticket /reservation if e-ticket same as your name on the passport.
cc. If you are vegetarian Vietnam food is the best.
dd. Vietnamese use to take a nap.Long lunch time.
ee. Don't forget to visit Ha long Bay, Cu chi tunnel and rehabilitation camp (war victims).
Good Luck
