Grandfather: May: 28, 25, 22, 19, 16, 13, 10, 7, 4, 1
Uncle: May: 19, 7

So the answer would be the 7th of May

At first I thought it was the 12th, but after looking it over I realized it can't be the 12th, because that implies that they both visited on the 1st.
Next I thought it was the the 3rd. The greastest common factor of 3 and 12 is 3, because 3 is a prime number. Because of this, the grandfather is there every time the uncle is there. But this doesn't let them visit both on the 31st.
Finally I have an answer that works:
It's May 7th. This allows them to both visit on the 31st. All I did was count backwards on the calendar by twelve twice, and I got to seven. It's not 19, which is the first subtraction of 12, simply because you can still go further back and get an earlier date.

May 31 doesn't really enter into this until we get the answer. Forget about it for now.

This is asking, what is the least common multiple of 3 and 12?
The answer is 12.

So they both visit on each 12th day.
This would be May 31st, and then working backwards, May 31 - 12 = May 19, and May 31 - 24 = May 7. May 7 is the first time in May that they visited together.

Because 3 is a multiple of 12 the uncle will always be there at the same time as the grandfather. So subtract 12 from 31 until the number is smaller than 12. So the first day they both would have been there is:

May 7

well, since every time his uncle visits his grandfather visits, just count by 12s all the way to the next date in may. Or else its a trick question because it says they both came on may 31st, so...
Otherwise the first method would work I would think
