Expressionism is about depicting something in a way that "expresses" what you think about it, rather than being an objective view of what you're seeing. You depict things with exaggerated forms, colors, moods, etc. to produce an effect which is more true to human experience than simply trying to represent reality.

These days it's mostly applied to painting, but in the early 20th century the movement that inspired expressionism in art also inspired theatre performances. Scripts use highly stylized, archetypal elements to present stories that are about more than just the people in them, using sets inspired by expressionist art.
