I live in California and currently live in an apartment. But with the birth of my daughter, we need another room. The places we have applied for so far don't seem to be interested in renting to us. Should I just give up?

The best bet may be to contact your current landlord and see if they have a larger apt.

Do you both work? Try getting a part time job. Then reapply. Then once you get the house you can quit the part time job.
I don't like to encourage dishonesty but this has been done and done.

Call on some rental houses in the paper that aren't listed with real estate co. They are harder to qualify with than the owner direct.

Best of luck,

Well my daughter who just happens to be named Jessica herself just went through this and this is the advice I gave her. Get a local paper and look up individuals that are renting. Her credit was not that good either but people don't tend to check credit where companies do. They got a small house which is ok for the time being. Good luck

Don't rent from a managment company, rent from individuals that won't pull your credit.
