First of all Fred P ever heard "A little knowledge is dangerous", This is my take on it, i don't think it is the battery as if it didn't start the first time then it wouldn't start after 3 minutes.
Possibly the alternator, but i don't think so you can start a car without an alternator.
I think it is either a wiring fault or more likely you have an immobiliser than is not allowing you to start the engine, now in escorts/fords the little chip that is need to start the car is in the key thob, this after 10years is possible beginning to act up and so cause the trouble, good luck.............................

I would suggest your alternator is not working. In other words, when you drive, you are running on the little juice provided on the alternator. This is common for a car of your year. Your batter is dead because you also are running on it. When you park it, the alternator is not running, and the battery is tapped out. Any battery will generate a small amount of juice when left sit for a while. Yours takes 3 minutes to regenerate (while not being used). Your battery is just fine. Your alternator should be putting out about 14 amps to run the car and charge up the battery every time you run your car. If you have an electrical meter (DC current) you can test this or any garage can take a quick check of this when the car is running. If you do it, put your leads on the ground and positive lead of the alternator. The ground is any metal place on the car. The positive lead is on the back on the alternator covered with a rubber cap.
God Bless you and give you peace

Check the battery connections first. if they are corroded, take them off the battery and clean them up with a mixture of baking soda and water with a wire brush. Then I would check the ground wire, negative wire on the battery. Make sure the ground is securely connected to a clean solid piece of metal around the engine area.

Could be a number or possibilities, but get some brazing wire and give the battery terminals and connectors a really good clean. You want them to shine, they can be scratched to hell but they need to shine like a mirror. Then re-connect it and see how it operates then. Often you can get a bit of oil on dirt on one connector that will stifle supply completly due to it's own discharge, but once removed and you have a clean connection the battery should get straight to the engine.

Sound like a bad relay or breaker, when the car is running check all the relays in the fuse pannel as well as under the hood for one that is hot to the touch or check your manual and find the main ignition relay or breaker and switch it out with another.

Check the tension on your belt to the alt. Sometimes if it is worn or loose it won't have enough tension to turn the pully.
A bad water pump can load up the belt and cause enough drag to keep the alt from charging correctly. If you keep all electrical items off and to a minimum this may lessen to load on the electrical system.

i am a mechanic apprentice so i might be able to help. by the sounds of it the alternator is bad, or the wiring to the battery is messed up. it also might have something to do with the plugs in the alternator, you can not check the alternator, or the plugs without taking it to like auto zone or somthing like that, you can check the batery plugs by taking them off, carefully, then put them back on. if the car doesn't work, sorry

Check the connections to your battery, they may be loose. That happened to me, and I tightened them and they were fine. Good luck!
