It's not the builder, but the quality of the build. If HP and Dell were to build the same system with the same hardware and software - which would you choose?

No one can make that choice for you. I will say that I've heard horrible things about Dell's tech support - but if you don't believe that you will ever need it, then it doesn't matter, really.

I've been using HPs for five years now - my father-in-law and sister-in-law both have $2,000+ Dell systems in comparison to my $500 HP that I upgraded myself. My computer runs fine while both of theirs are basically paper-weights.

It's not as simple as "which is better" ...for laptops, I think dell has hands down the best value in the market - mainly because they sell so many of them, they can sell them for less money than the competition. For desktops it's basically a toss up. Most of the main brands are comparable in quality and price. You just need to choose a computer that has the right specs for you and then compare price. One advantage that dell has is their "no questions asked" insurance policy....if anything happens to your computer, turn it in to get it fixed/replace. The insurance policy costs extra tho...

depends they are pretty much the same really.
Just look at both and see which offers the best value machine for your price range.
If you are planning on downloading lots of things (movies, music etc.) or playing lots of games or storing lots of video or music data get a big hardrive. (250gb for example is a good size)
If you need to do video or sound editing or if you keep lots of program open at once or want to play games get lots of RAM. (1gb is good)
Otherwise just get a fast processor (2.5 - 3GHz will do everything you need)
If in doubt just get the best all rounder you can for the money, you can always upgrade. (thats the beauty of PCs)

Edit:
sorry you cant upgrade cos its a laptop.
But you can upgrade hard drive with external hardrive.
make sure you get lots of ram, and good graphics card if your gonna play games and fast processor cos you cant change it....

If you have the knowledge or know someone who does, it is far cheaper to buy all the different components and scratch build it yourself, that way you also get a computer that is fitted out to your specific needs. most "shop bought" computers are set up to be okay at everything, but if you self build then you can have your machine tailored to be great for games or photo image processing, or wharever you needs are
