this may sound silly, but I think that a lot of people are just lazy and disrespectful. Therefore, they appear dumb. There is very little respect left, I'm talking about at all levels, from the 3 year old all the way to 50 somethings ... people are just rude. They don't try to be better or strive for that total accomplishment (no matter what it is), it's easier to just let someone else do it. Very sad. Thanks for asking that question, I thought no one else noticed this.

Not necessarily the world full of idiots, but... We use the computers (machines), even the dummies like me.
When we read a printed word in a book or a manual an average person retains approximately 75% of the information. If we read the computer screen, we will have to deduct another 25% or so. Consequently, we are capable to retain about 50% of what we read.
The language that we use in our computerized correspondence is atrocious. A lot of us do not even know how to write in cursive. Some can not read cursive. If we write, about 60% of us do not use cursive, we print if we have to write something.
Computers (the machines) are almost thinking for us. If we loose the ability to think, we will loose the ability to create. No, we are not becoming idiots. But we are loosing individuality to a great extent. We are slowly moving to becoming a Borg society. (Remember the Star Trek?)

i think that at least in the USA, our school systems have been going down the drain, and we are being surpassed in intelligence by many many other countries. our attempts to make the school systems successful for everyone has just resulted in the dumbing down of the material that we learn. The ideals taught in school focus on how to get things done, not to appreciate the actual learning behind it. While i do not think that the human race on whole is getting dumber, i think that with the standards the USA is putting in place for our children is a recipe for disaster.

The world's not getting dumber. There have always been and always will be a fair amount of ignorant people around. You're just learning, growing and getting smarter. You're beginning to realize that you're just as smart, if not smarter than many people around you. It's a good thing. It means you're gaining confidence with life experience. Don't let it get to your head though. Never underestimate anyone, and never stop listening to people and trying to understand their point of view. Always be a critical thinker!

Actually, I think yes, if we don't put some more effort into exercising our brains once in a while to think for ourselves instead of following a trend or something of the sort then yes, I believe in all entirety that it IS possible for the general populus to become "dumber" or as I would rather put it "less culturally diverse or knowledgeable" lol

good movie, but i think in many ways we are becoming smarter, mainly for the fact that theres a lot more information out there these days and its obtained more easily, the one thing i do feel like are society is dumbing down on is language, and reading skills, because now ppl would much rather watch a movie than read a book, but in the past reading, was one of the largest forms of entertainment, if not the largest, but in other areas, say math for instance, i think the average person is more knowledgable than they were 100 years ago : )

I went to Legislative Day in Albany 10 years ago, and the speaker there was talking about the schools "dumbing our kids down", and that they are gradually relaxing and lowering the educational standards.
I know that the kids in my daycare are allowed to use calculators in classes, and on their quizzes....they sure seem dumber to me!!

Although dumber is a word, I believe the proper term would be, "Is the world becoming more ignorant?"
You've answered your own question.
