Initially, soldiers go in believing they are fighting for a real cause and to ensure that you sleep well at night. Many of them are coming out of the 'War on Terror' feeling differently.

Don't criticize the soldiers. You can thank Bush for convincing a good number of Americans that this war is just.

To the families of soldiers - I hope your boys come home safe.

You have the occasional person who craves the perceived excitement and glory of war. As William T. Sherman once said: "War is Hell!"

Going to war and willing to sacrifice your life for your beliefs is very heroic. It is a very sad person who will not defend his country and his beliefs, but wants all the freedoms he/she takes for granted. War is not glory. Sometimes it is necessary. It also takes a special person to stand up for someone who cannot stand for themselves.

A grunt gains no glory - only the satisfaction of doing what was asked and what was right. The grunt only wants to be successfull and appreciated.

The familes grieve for their lose, but move on.

The only ignorance is the person who thinks they can enjoy their freedoms and then ask such questions without regard to those who come before us and made that ultimate sacriface.

It takes a special person to risk his/her life to save the life of another. An American Soldier will lay his/her life on the line to save a fellow soldier. However, an American Soldier will not deliberately kill himself or herself just to kill a few of the enemy. Terroist will kill themself just to kill you.

Don't ever think soldiers are suicidal. They are just brave enough to do what few have the guts to do - protect you and your freedom. Believe this! Our freedoms are being challenged every day and most Americans are too selfish to realize this. It is not about you. It is about all Americans and people of other free countries.

You should watch Michael Moore's 911 movie. A lot of soldiers have no choices about how to make a living.

Soldiers have the job of protecting us. Just be glad they are there and hope they don't ask that question of themselves.

I wouldn't call it suicidal. To a point I do see what you are saying, but a suicidal person is usually unhappy with life and simply wants out.

But the vast majority of soldiers are there, not because they hate life, but because they believe there are some things that are important enough to give your life for. They believe in ideas like freedom and the goodness of democracy, and in the idea of protecting your homeland (and by extension his/her family who live in that homeland). And they believe that there are those out there who are trying to take it from us (from all humans really), and they are willing to give their lives to step in the way of those people.

I understand that in this case it appears you disagree with the war at hand. I agree with you, this war is morally wrong and a logistical nightmare (which is a nice way of saying "we're f**ked" right now). And in fact, my beliefs say that all wars are wrong, no matter the reason we fight them (and I believe we never know the real reason--all that talk of fighting for freedom and the dignity of humankind and such is just a propaganda-laden cover for the power-hungry to send those soldiers to their deaths in an attempt to gain even more power and wealth for our "illustrious leaders"). Killing is wrong, plain and simple; especially for what is in the end a completely inconsequential part of history.

Country against country, kingdom against kingdom, nation against nation. This is what human history has been, and it is even worse now. It wouldn't matter if America wiped out every last terrorist out there and completely cemented their standing as the most powerful country in the world, because America isn't God's Kingdom. America is part of this world and is just as evil (it is as much in the power of the wicked one--Satan-- as every other country on earth). To kill to protect America is to take something that belongs to God (human lives) to perpetuate a government that is against God's will (since all governments are attempting to do what belongs only to God--rule over humankind). America will be wiped out along with the rest of the world when Jesus returns, and I don't want to be on America's side (or any other country's side for that matter) when Jesus goes up against all of them.

So in the end I disagree strongly with what soldiers do. But while their actions may be evil, their motive is not. They aren't going against God because they want to, but because they misunderstand the situation (they don't even realize they are going against God). They have fallen for the propaganda; and I can't attack them for it, propaganda is extremely sneaky in its attack. They wouldn't be the first ones to fall for it, and there have even been times when I've fallen for it myself. But they are out to protect me, my family, you and your family, and most of all their own families. I may hate their actions, but they are my brothers and they are only trying to do what is right and I will not hate them for it. I pray for them, I'll work for them to show them the way. The rest is up to them and God.
