I learned to type by covering my keyboard with a piece of felt and learning to find the home row as well as the other keys without being able to cheat and look. When I was a freshman in highschool my computer teacher told me I was going to fail if I didn't learn to type (I was one of the worst in the class.) Between practicing and class something clicked and I ended up being the 2nd fastest typer in class (83wpm). Typing articles from the newspaper or a magazine keeps it interesting.

I can't type anywhere near as fast as that now but I still know how to type without looking at the keys.

There are typing video games you can get from the Internet (or probably buy as well) that are really fun. I played one where I had to kill zombies by typing words that popped up on the screen. That might be something fun to try. I learned how to type in high school simply by practicing. Assign him 2 letters a day to learn starting with the home keys. Just keep having him type them over and over, with spaces, without spaces, etc. It really is just a matter of practicing. Once he learns all the letters & numbers, assign sentences and then paragraphs. Eventually you can start timing him and having him improve his time. There are other programs on the Internet that let you type paragraphs and see what your WPM are, but that should come later.

When I took typing in high school, my typing teacher taught us by making place our fingers on the correct home row key and typing that letter over and over with that finger until we covered each home row key and the using those fingers for the other letters. It helped me. I made a good bit of money typing papers in college for other students. I'm also the only male in school that can type and one of the few teachers that can type without looking at the keys.

Don't laugh -- I play TyperShark, a kid's game in Yahoo's Games. You have to type the letter before the shark gets you. It's a great program that's a game.

Also, show him the wonderful world in Instant Messaging -- get him online with you on the other end ... do some naughty typing. That'll motivate him!

Try the Mavis Beacon typing program. I teach adults and it works very well with them. You can buy a single use program for about $10 at Staples or Wal-Mart. I promise you that's a good program and will work for him. What I like about it is that it is not "baby-like" Good luck....tell him to be patient. He's not too old to learn.

I taught my husband to memorize where the keys are...to picture them in his mind...it took a little while but he got it and can now type pretty fast. I also told him to type the letters and not worry about the words he was typing. That really helped him a lot.

They have different games, and it's very easy to catch on.
