The answer is 20. Work backwards.
He ended with 12 by dividing by 4, so multiply by 4 to get 48. Then he added 8, so lets subtract 8 to get 40. This is double his original number, so the original number must be 20.

12 times 4 is 48 minus 8 is 40 40 divided by 2 is 20 so the number was 20..

20 doubled is 40 then add 8 is 48 and divided by 4 is 12.

(x*2+8)/4=12 => x*2+8=12*4[48]=> x*2=48-8[40]=> x=40/2=20...so Mike picked 20

reverse the process.

12 x 4 = 48
48 - 8 = 40
40 divided by 2 = 20

He started with 20

Just work it backwards....
12 X 4 = x

x - 8 = y

y / 2 = the number that Mick picked...
