In theory if the average student got all C's then the average GPA would be 2.0. If you got half C's and half B's then your average would be about 2.5. If you got all Bs then your GPA would be 3. So a kid who gets half As and half Bs would have roughly a 3.5.

To get a 4.0 you need straight A's. except, if you take honors or AP courses in a lot of schools, they give you a GPA bonus, so lots of very smart kids graduate with GPAs higher than 4.0 because they got As in honors or AP classes.

I read once that the average GPA for all college bound high school seniors was 3.4. That's why the admissions officers have so many headaches.... how are you supposed to decide who to admit when everyone has good marks?

a C average would be 2.0 where:

A=4 pts
B=3pts
C=2pts
D=1pt
F=0 pts
