I didn't start my period until I was 14. It seemed like my "heavier" friends got theirs earlier, I was fairly thin. Not sure if weight has anything to do with it or not but it kind of seemed that way.

A girl can begin to menstruate at any age between 11 and 17 and still be fine after 17 most Dr. will start them on a therapy to get them started if it is causing health problems. Don't worry this is perfectly fine.

Per Kids Health: On average, most girls start their periods when they're 12 or 13 years old (although some begin earlier or later). But if you wait until your daughter gets her period to talk to her about menstruation, that's too late. (http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/positive/talk/talk_about_menstruation.html)

There's no reason at all to suppose there's anything wrong. Some girls show no sign at all of development until they're 16 and yet there's nothing necessarily wrong.

Has your niece shown the other ususal signs of development -- breasts budding and traces of hair on her labia or elsewhere?

Time to start investigating if there's no sign of anything five years from now!

Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with her. Women start their periods at different ages, so who knows when your niece will get hers.
