is there a list u can check to see what x.box games i can play on my x.box360 live. how do i get hold of teh list of games.

If you are hooked up to Xbox Live on your 360 go to the Live marketplace. You cannot download full games on xbox live but you can download full arcade games. For most downloads you will need Microsoft Points (which cost money) but for some demos and patches they will be free. Also when you buy games at stores, if you check the back it will say Xbox Live accessible if you can play it on live.

You do however have to download a 'backwards compatability' upgrade which is available here http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm You either have to connect to xBox Live through a PC or put it on a disc. I put it on a disc as it was much much simpler!
