I am just learning to sew with a machine my aunt gave me. She gave me the needle for denim but I don't remember if there is a specific thread to use... Any helpful hints for a beginner would be great! Thanks! PS I'm not a child I am a 38 year old mother...not that it makes any difference I guess, I'm still a beginner! Thanks for your help!

Depends on the weight of the denim, but if you're using jeans weight denim, a cotton thread in a heavier weight like size 40 is good. Or a topstitching thread for finishing the seams - the gold coloured thread that is stitched on the top of the seam.

I generally use a polyester core thread with a cotton wrapping. Coats and Clark makes one brand, check out a sewing store. A denim needle is about size 16 - 18, specially for sewing with heavy thread.

I am not an expert, but here is my opinion based on what I have learned from the shop where I bought my latest machine and get all my thread. As a general rule you should match your thread to your fabric. In this case, since denim is cotton, use a cotton thread. If your denim is a combination of cotton and some stretchier material, I don't know. Since denim is usually very heavy, I would choose a heavier weight thread for it than I would for say a blouse. Always buy good quality thread. Cheap threads can gum up your machine causing many headaches down the line. I hope this helps.

Any sewing machine will sew denim. Just go to a fabric store and buy any heavy duty needle. Or, tack them with needle and thread.

my grandma always used a thicker thread and normally it was in the same colour as denim. how the blue is darker is some spots.
You can use normal thread though, it works just as well.

I've been sewing since I was 12.

The regular thread. Coates & Clark, etc. By the way, I sew, and I've never seen a "denim" needle.
