My engine seems to be running a little more rought then before, and once every 10-20 seconds there is a bit of a squeak. I shared this with the gas station guy and he seems to think its my belt.

I drive a 2003 Blazer -- is this a universal belt? Serpentine belt [had it replaced 4 months ago]? Am I going to die on the highway? :P

Thanks for the info

You have a serpentine belt, and I would have your altenator checked out. The bearings on the alt will cause the belt to drag and the engine to run rough. While you are at it, have your AC pump check, also. The intermittent squeal/squeak may be the AC clutch engaging and this too may need servicing soon. The AC will still run even though you do not have it turned on, especially if you have the Defrost on.

the notion that a belt might take the squeak is right. It will not make the engine run any better. I dont think it's going to die as well, however if you are concerned about the "rough run", take it to the dealership.

They are a bit more expensive, however you have good mechanics there who know their job, and know their Chevy's.

Good Luck

Universal in that it's made out of rubber compounds.
There are more belt sizes out there than Carter has Pills.
Every 10 - 20 seconds almost sounds like the idler pulley or the tensioner pulley is starting to freeze up.
And yes I have seen them fail and shread everything.
P.S. Ken must own a dealership.

its a serpentine belt.check the tensioner.it could be bad and not putting the right tension on the belt or it could just be glazed.get some belt dressing and spray the belt and see if the squeal stops.the only way you will be stranded is if the belt breaks or comes off.

You're not going to die because of that. The squeak is your belt slipping a little bit.

You not gonna die.don't even say that.

the belt tensioner spring is bad, when the alternator is supplying the power to the battery the belt slip because is loose.

i would have all the belts checked as the weather and temps wreak havoc on the rubber belts....

please check for abnormal tear and wear or unsual look. if that is an original drive belt installed and without any traces of damaged, that is still in good condition!
