Now: iPod. iTunes is unmatched
Soon: Zune. has more memory, and better features (such as wireless transfer (before you comment on its limited range, let me comment that the iPod does not have even wired transfer) of parts of certain songs, and all videos/songs you record yourself), but lacks something comparable to iTunes. so buy the Zune.

The Zune has an FM transmitter and FM receiver built in, but at such a small size, neither will work as well as you might like. As for the file-sharing gimmick, realize that the iPod holds about 90% of the hard-drive player market, leaving a mere 10% of the remainder to be split up between all of the competition, of which the Zune is not the most popular. In order to make use of this feature, you will need to find someone else who has a Zune, and the shared file will reportedly last for three uses or one day, whichever comes first.
Comparitively, the iPod does not include any FM functionality built in, but if you are so inclined there are multiple transmitters and at least two receivers (both of which double as clip-on remote controls, so you can leave your iPod safely stowed in your pocket or backpack, which is not an option with the Zune). File sharing capability with the iPod is not possible without a computer, but any CDs that you own can be ripped into another person's iTunes, and any songs that are purchased through iTunes can be shared amongst five computers and/or iPods. So it is possible to share songs. It's not as simple of a process, but they also don't expire.
The Zune has a larger screen, the iPod has a more intuitive user interface, the Zune has wireless syncing (you still have to plug it in to charge it, though), the iPod has significantly more variety of accessories, and both play file formats that the other can't. The 30GB Zune costs the same as a 30GB iPod, and the 60GB Zune...oh wait, that's right, they only sell a 30GB hard-drive model. No larger capacity, no lightweight Flash-based counterpart, just the 30GB, which is larger and heavier than the 30GB iPod. But the biggest seller, in my opinion, is iTunes. Not only does the iTunes store have the largest selection of music available in a format that's superior to MP3, but the interface was designed to work seamlessly with the iPod. It seems like every knock-off brand is focussing on trying to copy the iPod itself, but noone ever bothers to come up with an interface to rival iTunes. Just build playlists of your songs, tell the iPod which ones you want loaded, and it will automatically download every song that's on those playlists. Want to make a new playlist when you're away from your computer? No problem, you can build an On-The-Go playlist with just your iPod, and it'll even sync back to your iTunes program the next time you plug in.

The Zune isn't bad and has some features over the iPod. But, in the end, it's an also-ran. Few of the features are innovative. And the one that is unusual, the ability to tirelessly share songs, isn't all that useful due to restrictions.
You won't be sad to have purchased a Zune, but unless you dislike the iPod and don't want to go with another brand (e.g., Creative) with more features, you might as well go iPod.
