it's probably just sized down too far. place your cursor all the way at the bottom of the screen until you get an up&down arrow then drag it back to a reasonable size.

it also isn't necessesariy anchored to the bottom of the screen. If you can't find it there, try the top, left, and right sides of the screen

first off all, did you move it? Check the sides and the top to see if it's there. Second did you hide it? Move your mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen and see if it pops up. If it does, right click on the area right next to the start button and click properties. Once the property dialog is open make sure "Auto-Hide the taskbar" is unchecked.

Good luck

That problem might be cuase of bushing the button to shut it down the computer instead of going to start then turn off.

Maybe your computer lost data so i would do two things.

The first and easy would do a system recovery. You go to start, all programms, accessories and system tool then system retore

The other option take to a technician to find the problem maybe its the opeating system he might advice you need more RAM or
your CPU is too slow.

I haven't try it but myabe you can reinstall windows xp operating system

This kinda sounds like registry corruption, which might be fixed fairly easily. This website offers several solutions to problems such as yours, but before you try all of them, try a safe registry cleaner. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/cleanup.htm

I would reboot to factory settings using a restoration or recovery disk.
