In which country? The United States of America has 50 states. That's the only one I can tell you about for sure because that's where I live. We also have some commonwealths that are not states, such as Puerto Rico.

That depends on which country and your definition of "state".Massachusetts for instance is considered a common wealth,not a state,as are several others in the east.

The US has 48 contiguous States, and two isolated ones, many territories spread throughout the world and one colony in the middle east. Plus the unofficial colony of Israel.
