I'm teaching a lesson on latin american culture, and I need some ideas of what most people know and don't know. So give me anything (even stereotypes) that you know about spanish-speaking people please.

I AM NOT TRYING TO STEROTYPE! I'M TRYING TO DO THE OPPOSITE! THE REASON FOR ME POSTING THIS QUESTION IS TO SEE SOME OF THE MORE IGNORANT ANSWERS THAT PEOPLE MIGHT ASK IN CLASS SO THAT I CAN BE READY TO CORRECT THEM. THANK YOU.

Wow! That is a big category! Argentines are nothing like Peruvians, and none of the latin Americans have very much in common with Spaniards. Spaniards form Catalonia are very different from Basques. Mexicans from Puebla are quite different from Mexicans from Sinaloa or Baja California.

Well it depends are you talking Spain Spanish or Spanish speaking ie Mexican which are mostly half spanish and half indian?
Spain is a lovely country, but they have odd ways of bilking the tourists. I also found througout history that whereever they colonized the countries turned rather corrupted, so that covers more territory than I think English colonies.
I also find those that live in my area are very marganilized. The older ones refuse to speak the language, although they can understand it and can speak it if they really wanted to, they let their kids be interpreters.
My Grandfather felt that if you are going to live in a country you learn the language the natives speak, work hard and and don't demand special privileges, like requiring the cities to hire bilingual folks to communicate with them.. I think he was right.
He cut enough sugar cane in his childhood to know hard labor is not the way to make it in this world.

1. Native Spanish speaking people have a hard time spelling words, they are not used to do it as often as English people do.. Being Spanish a phonetical language they feel that if you can say it then you can write it. When in doubt, the person will just pronounce the word slower, there's no need to spell.

2. Spanish lastnames are not that many. The number of English surnames is enormous compared to the Spanish ones. This is the reason they have two lastnames, from both their parents.

I think i might be helpful since i'm mexican.

We are in gral talktative people. We love to be around our family and friends and support each other a lot.
It would be hard to find someone celebrating their birthday alone, we celebrate everything we can.
Imagine this: there this marathon called Guadalupe- Reyes. BEcause the day of the Virgen de Guadalupe is dec 12th (important day for us), so we begin partying that day, through x mas and new years until january 6th which is the day of the kings (a tradition that says that the 3 kings brought different presents to baby jesus when he was born), so its a whole month of celebration with friends and family.

Very cheerful people we are :D

Whit all the respect that you deserve, I hate those kind of stupid questions. There are about 390 millions Spanish-speaking people in the world and you want to stereotype, obviously the stereotypes will be related with the stereotypical way people from the so-called first world countries have from people from third world countries. Those 390 millions in different continents, in places with different climates, they belong to different races and social classes...

Hispanics have a lot of children? So why the average number of children per woman in Spain is 1,3 and in Cuba is 1,6? (In UK is 1,7 and in US is 2,0). Hispanics must be Roman Catholics? So why in Uruguay 30% of the population is non-religious and in El Salvador 45% is protestant?

It makes me angry how people from your country like to divide people in "ethnic groups" and then put a lot of characteristcs on each group. As if because I'm black I have to talk with an accent, or because I'm Hispanic I must be "family-oriented" and "spicy". All that to justify the superioty of whites from northern countries, cause they would be "culturally superior" (A nice way to scape from the acusation of racism or ethnocentrism).

It irritates me also how people from your country think that Hispanics and all Latin Americans are just like the poorest of the poorest Mexicans that emmigrate to your country.

in Spanish, depending on where you're from, you can have somewhat of a different dialect
example: in America, we say bathroom or restroom, in Europe, they say loo
my mom once know other Spanish speaking kids and for my mom's Spanish, "brewjo" means messy hair, or male witch. My mom's friend asked my grandpa if he was "brewjo", but she meant grouchy or grumpy.
If you speak Spanish and you're white, your accent isn't very good, and it sounds like you are chewing metal.
If you speak Spanish and it's your native tongue, it sounds pretty.
Spanish-speaking students are usually bilingual cuz the schools make em learn English. They arent' stupid, they just hafta take the stupid state test in English. Imagine if they made all English speaker stake the test in Spanish! We wouldn't score so high either!
It seems like many Mexicans usually show good hospitality. My grandma would always offer guests something to eat and ask if they wanted to stay for dinner.

This is quite a wide category...
From what I understand, los hispanohablantes:
- are family-oriented
- are usually Catholic and devoutly religious
- in Mexico, 'el dia de los muetros' is a huge holiday and is steeped in a rich tradition for remembering the dead
- their diet consists of very little red meat - chicken is consumed more often than any other animal
- a quincinera birthday (the 15th) is the equivalent to our sweet 16 (I used to know why the 15th is so important, but I don't remember)

I hope that kinda helps! Good luck!

All the ones I know are bilingual, which makes them more educated than 90% of the white Americans I know.

All the ones I know can tell if a tortilla is homemade or storebought by smelling it. I sure can't! They are also much more family oriented than us crackers. They take care of their old family members while whitey sticks 'em in the nearest nursing home when they get too old to be cute any more.

All the ones I know are Mexican. I have no idea what Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Spanish, or South Americans are like.

I know that latin americans are beautiful people who take care of their families. I also know their culture in my opinion is too "macho" and and self centered on sex, and destruction by watching latino programming. It's even worse than anglo american culture which is the same in that respect but more "toned down". I love the Latin culture because it's people seem more sincere than other cultures.

Well judging by my husband who is from Peru...

He is hard working; he loves his mother; he speaks and thinks in English but dreams in Spanish; he loves soccer (almost so much that it's a religion); he likes salsa music; he loves his kids; he's a fabulous cook; what they say about latin guys labidos is VERY true. lol

Some of those are just normal things. Some are specific to him...not sure which ones are specific (if any) to his culture.
