Have you checked out the Avon Biofirming moisturizers? They're fantastic and go on sale quite often. They feel like a water based gel going on, sink in fast, and last all day. I'm a big fan.
Try also Oil of Olay, Oil Free moisturizer. Great product. L'Oreal Plentitude is fantastic as well. All of these can be purchased from Wal-mart, etc.
As for the more expensive ones, go to your local department store and "test" the ones that are suitable for your skin type before buying. That way, you will be buying something you already know works, hence, justifying the cost.

To moisturize dry skin, I use Vaseline Extensive Care lotion all over, then I use Vaseline on severely chapped or dry areas (lips, nose). This is great for winter time when your face gets dry and chapped from sickness and the cold. Good luck!
