Software has been created in many languages! The first software was written in machine code or binary. There have been dozens of hi level languages for writing programs since then. You would have to specify what particualar programming you would be interested in.

The main ones are C, C++ and Java, although a basic knowledge of Assembler is also important. There are some other domain-specific ones too, for instance a web developer needs to know PHP, ASP and Javascript. A game developer may need to know Lua and will also have to be familiar with 3D libraries for other languages.

You could use C++ to create any language you want to, even using Visual C++ for some GUIs.

it depends on what type of software you're talking about, for example, very few, if any, web sites are programmed with C++.
Php, Jsp and asp .net predominate the area. os's are normally developed in C++.
Cheers
