I hate when people say that as well. Sometime people talk to hear themselves speak. I don't know what tired looks like. You could be sick or something who knows. I know that I hate when people say you got fat. i just ignore comments and say Thank you.

I don;t see how it looks like a 'veiled insult' to you, it is just an expression people use when they see a look on a person's face, usually fatigue from a long day;s work.

Perhaps you simply look tired. It sounds like you are a little vain, that you would be getting upset that someone suggested you look tired. You are going to get old and die, I think the last thing you should be worried about is that someone "insulted" you by suggesting you look tired.

Perhaps the statement is not meant as an insult but a concerned observation. We don't see ourselves in the same way as those who see us on a regular basis. Perhaps the person noted that our color isn't as rosy as in previous days; or our smile isn't as bright as usual; or we have some darkening/discoloration under/around our eyelids that wasn't there the day before; or there isn't the regular pep in our step. Also some people are more vocal with their opinions/observations than we may be.

This is one that I wouldn't let bother me. I'd just say, "thanks for the concern," and be on my way.

You know maybe it's not an insult, maybe they're noticing you aren't getting enough sleep and are concerned, like asking "are you feeling ok?" - don't be too sensitive. PS - are you getting enough sleep? Perhaps you DO look tired!

Usually, it's spoken out of concern. You will explain what you've been up that has caused you to look tired. Then when you get home, you will try to be a little kinder to yourself and squeeze in more sleep.

i don't think it's a veiled insult, think your being to sensitive, or self concious, maybe low self esteem. To me when people say that i usually am tired, maybe just tired physically or emotionally. When i ask someone that question it is out of genuine concern for their well being so if i can help in anyway, i will.

may be you look pale?
i don't understand your concern usually when I say you look tired , it's a start to conversation and usually poeple start talking about themselves and how tired they are and they feel relieved but if you don't want anybody to tell u that , well that's no problem
but i don't think it's an offensive comment it's more about somebody cares about u

As you said, it is a "veiled insult." Perhaps they don't intend to be mean. They just don't want to come right out and say "Oh my god, you look like crap!"

They might say that, because you may have bags under your
eyes, or just not in your happy mood. It really isn't a insult. It's just
a way of letting you know that, "Hey you might want to take it a
little slower you look exhausted."
