The north star? I'm pretty sure that's only visible in the northern hemisphere.

Regardless, Polaris might be the answer you're looking for. But since Magellan was not the first to cross the Equator, I'm skeptical that they had this reaction.

The north famous individual i assume. yet by using fact that Magellan replaced into no longer the 1st to circulate the equator i don't be attentive to why it could have led to his team to freak. I wager a lot of them had crossed the equator earlier.

Sigh. The North star is still visible but it is not in the usual location, like right above you. Portugal would not have this star on top of them anyway. It is somewhere lower by a few degrees.
In the equator, it is still much lower, maybe a third of the way closer to the horizen but it is still there.
There are different stars and constellations that are visible at that location, so the sky is waaayy prettier and stellar ( pardon the pun) in the equator. They would be freaked out by that. or the fact that the stars will be disorienting .

I disagree with the answer by "Quite New Here". Lisbon, Portugal, is about 39 degree N, so the north star would be about 39 degrees above the horizon (plus or minus 1 degree).
On the equator, the north star would be on the horizon (about 1/2 degree above due to refraction, plus or minus 1 degree because the north star is not exactly north) -- if you could see it at all through the haze.
