First it depends on your state. Many states (not all) have their inmates listed on the Department of Correction's website. Some states only have a listing of sex offenders, some only list inmates in STATE prison, but not county jails. (there is difference)

In my state we do not have a listing of inmates available to search. I believe I can contact the prison and get the inmates name and ID number. It helps to know what facility they are at.

I don't know from your question what information you are seeking. Your state's judicial website will show you what he was charged with and what he was convicted of. Your state Dept. of Corrections will also have a website that gives you some information on prisoners unless they're in a protective custody situation. For example, someone who testified against the Mafia might be in protective custody in jail and his/her location might be hidden.

Most prisons have admin that will help, provided you are a relative, bit like asking about a hospital patient.

www.crimetime.com click on the picture that says black book online. then go to state and local data, then click on the state. then look for inmate records or something to that effect.
