Deer crossing signs are posted in places where deer tend to be active... They are posted not to show people where to go look for deer, but to warn drivers to drive carefully in those areas to avoid harming a crossing deer or your vehicle.

The reason they put those signs up is because there were either a lot of deer sightings there, or a ton of accidents. The Dept of Nat Resources also look at the habitat- if it is optimal for deer, there are probably ones there.
You have never seen a deer crossing the road? I have been driving for 5 yrs now, and hit two, and missed at least 40. I could be underestimating that number.
The DOT is not guaranteeing that you will see a deer- they just don't want you to get in an accident. Not many tax dollars are spent on the signs-once they are there, they are there. Why are they paying for deer? If you hit a deer- the police come and shoot it- then you can take the meat home.
Honestly, you should check your facts before posting. It seems you are very misinformed.

DOT does not predict where the deer will cross, but to let you know that you are entering a territory where deer live and there is a possibility that there may be a deer that crosses the road. The signs are warning signs for people to be careful so they don't hit them and this is not because they are worried about the deer. Oftentimes, when motorists hit deer, it is usually fatal for the people in the vehicle and many times for the deer as well. It is fatal accidents with deer that cause DOT to post the signs.

Deer Crossing signs are to just keep you aware that there might be deer around in the area, what i don't understand is when they put up signs saying deer crossing in the next 5 miles, so after 5 miles you don't have to worry about a deer popping lout infront of you! Wrong deer don't go by the signs deer go where they want to go. Sign or no sign! All drivers should be aware of there surroundings at all times night or day anyway, if they are cautious. A learning experience.

The sign is a warning to YOU as a driver. It is not for the deer. Deer can total your car or even kill you in an accident. The sign is to let you know that deer have been reported crossing in this area and you should be aware and keep an eye out.

Do you have any commonsense at all? Why do you think they put up "Children at play" signs in neighborhoods? It's not that people are waiting to see a deer and the deer eats them alive. It's that the deer is trying to find a mate so it can reproduce (something you shouldn't do). Sometimes it has to cross a highway. Believe it or not, that can be dangerous to the animal and the human. That is why they put up signs. So smart people can drive cautiously and possibly live to see another day.

The natural paths that deer take results in them getting hit by vehicles. The accident report lets DOT know the problem areas and they will post the sign for your convenience.

because deer use trails and usually the same one all the time. DOT personnel are trained to know what to look for and after they check, that's when they put those signs up.
