Well, yes the spelling is right Sohag or Sawhaj, it is a big town, the City of Sohag is the capital of the Sohag governrate,Two Coptic monasteries are there ,It is also a major Coptic Christian center for Upper Egypt, On the Nile River. It is located in a densely populated agricultural region. The Nile river split the city into east and west bank, connected together with 2 bridges one on the middle of the city (Akhmim Bridge), and the newer one in the south of the city, the west bank is the main part, and the east bank is the newer, contain the governrate building, the university, many schools, hotels, many clubs on the Nile . In the Nile river there is two islands, Elzohour island (meaning the flowers) it is the small one it contains villas to rent and a small club, Karaman island is the big. Achmin is A few kilometers from Sohag, on the eastern bank of the Nile is the town of Achmin.
any way Sohag is more touristic place and ofcourse its not like Sharm El Shaikh or Hurgada, its different people there are more conservative .go through the below sites as they will give u more info.... Good Luck
