Half of my thyroid was taken out to remove a benign nodule which had made me hyperthyroid. It has been six weeks since the surgery. My TSH level is now at 9 (hypothyroid) and I'm supposed to start taking Synthroid. I was hoping the remaining half of my thyroid would start to work so that I could avoid taking medication. Has anyone had luck with this? What steps did you take?

You will need to supplement what the remainder of your thyroid can produce. It has a limited capacity.

If you're not averse to using animal products, then you can ask your doctor about taking dessicated thyroid instead of Synthroid, but you will need that supplementation from some source for the rest of your life.

You will probably need thyroid hormone the rest of your life. It's really no big deal. I've been taking thyroid meds for 6 years now. The key is knowing as much as you can about being hypothyroid. On Synthroid, you want the TSH around 1.0. Your 9 is too high and indicates you need a higher dose of medication. Below are some links. Please read up, so you get the best care and feel your best.

Once the thyroid is gone it's gone. The medicine is there to take place of whatever function the thyroid cannot put off. Your TSH levels are dangerously low and you really do need to take your medicine. A low thyroid can cause many complications up to and including a coma.

I understand your concerns about not wanting to take meds, but I suggest following your doctor's instructions.

Keep in mind that A HUGE majority of the people on here are not medical professionals and the information they give is strictly opinion.
