Yeah, you are right. It's kind of unwritten code I guess. I suppose the girls who wear hijab are not considered suitable for the atmosphere a 5-star-hotel provides.
Even more, our national T.V doesn't allow veiled female broadcasters.
I guess there should be freedom. Everybody should be allowed to wear what they like.
It's kind of hypocracy that we ask the west to allow Muslim women to wear Hijab in public facilites and not allow it here in our home land. On the same regard, it was also hypocracy not to support the Egyptian Coptic female attendant who was suspended from her work on a British air-line because she insisted on wearing a cross. Egypt should have supported both cases.
I believe everybody should be free to wear what they like as long as it is not provocative. Yet again, who gets to decide what is provocative and what is not ?

you are right , and it's not fair i know . and not only in hotels but also in many jobs "in big companies" and companies that related to western or american business men, because they see it's not "civilized" to employ women in hijab , they see civilized modern women shouldn't be in hijab. i'm an interior design student in hijab and don't have any chance in big companies when i graduate

yeah that is so true,I had to quite my job for it,I used to be a reservation clerk on a well known hotel but can't continue cause I wear hijab, after I worked on a travel agency and it was also hard to find one allows women in hijab, its soooo weired as if we do respect ourselves we should let others respect us for the way we are not the was they want us to be,as even tourists were so impressed with hijab to the extant that one time a friend of mine was asked by a female tourist to have one of her head scarfs as a souvenir,so that hidden policy is kinda stupid.

my husband is from tunisia and i almost married a moroccan guy pretty much all my friends are arabic. the reason is these countries cater to the west. they do not want tourists to feel uncomfortable. the governments in these countries are just as corrupt as any other government. in tunisia if you work for the government you are not allowed to wear a head scarf. my sister in law is a school teacher and she is not allowed to wear a head scarf. the governments of these countries feel that if they allow their citizens to be very religious there could be a revolution and they would loose their positions in power. example the president of libya was developing nuclear technology and when he saw what happened with saddam he immediatly disarmed out of fear. all of his body guards are women believe it or not. he says that men will betray quicker then a woman. when you do not allow people to be religious there is less fear of a civil uprising. and when america hates muslims who is currently the super power to avoid being attacked they give into what ever "the big bully wants" plane and simple

well for large firms and businesses like 5 stars hotels, whats fair and whats not isnt the main concern for them, they are not charity organizations, their main target is making money.
not to mention that most if not all of the 5 stars hotels in egypt are funded by foreigners whether as partners or franchise.
so, the idea is, in order to "sell" and attract customers they try to hire goodlooking non-conservative women, and i dont mean those girls are bad girls, its just the image they are trying to give, as part of the hotel decoration.
and look at the target cutomers of 5 stars hotels, either Arabs from the gulf or foreigners cause both bring alot of money.
the Gulf Arabs, are sick of covered up girls, and foreigners find girls with hijab weirdos, so veiled girls wont be that encouraging to make them come again.
this is totally non-acceptable, cause at the end Egypt is a Muslim country (along with our beloved christian brothers and sisters)
but what can we do, unfortunatly many businessmen stopped putting religion in consideration (and i dont mean hijab issues only).
God bless us all

Yea your right, i guess they think it may "offend" other people like they tried to with that Egyptian woman wearing the cross..she actually came into my church you know! Sorry just have to share that, but i totally agree with you they're discriminating against people who wear the hijab or other religious symbols.

This is not only in hotels. You won't find a stewardess wearing a veil. Additionally, many firms (specially law firms) don't hire women wearing veils.
I think this is COMPLETELY unfair. It's discrimination between religions AND discrimination between genders. Because:
A muslim guy who really cares about his religion doesn't have to do anything to show it. I mean, he doesn't have to wear something in particular, so that doesn't show and he doesn't get discriminated. Growing a beard is NOT the same, because growing a beard is not mandatory. If a man doesn't grow one, he just doesn't get the "bonus", but it isn't a sin. Unlike wearing a veil which is mandatory, because you do not only get rewarded for wearing one, but you get punished for not wearing one.
It is also discrimination between religions, which needs no further explanation!!

20% of Egypt population is Coptic Cristian and maybe the women you saw were Christians, so it is not strange to see women without hejab.
