Born near Hunt City in Jasper County, Illinois, Ives is probably best remembered for his music. The prominent music critic John Rockwell has been quoted in the New York Times as saying that "Ives's voice... had the sheen and finesse of opera without its latter-day Puccinian vulgarities and without the pretensions of operatic ritual. It was genteel in expressive impact without being genteel in social conformity. And it moved people." [1]
He traveled about the U.S. as an itinerant singer during the early 1930s, earning his way by doing odd jobs and playing his banjo. He was jailed in Mona, Utah, for singing “Foggy Foggy Dew”, which the authorities decided was a bawdy song.

Just remember - the music you think is so hot and great right now will one day be looked at in the same way that you are looking at Burl Ives. You need to learn how to appreciate music more.. I mean, we wouldnt have the music that we have today if it wasnt for the music that we had in the past...

Burl Ives wasn't known for yodeling. He was an actor and singer. Check out http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0412322/

As for appreciating 'good music,' what constitutes good music is a matter of opinion. I'm older than your parents, and I'd rather listed or Aerosmith or Led Zepplin or any other good rock group, instead of hip-hop, rap or Burl Ives.

Kids know Burl Ives by the snowman on Rudolph The Red Nose Raindeer classic. I am 49 and I know nothing of his music other than that one show and the songs he sings on it.

I'm 59 and remember him from when I was a teenager. Some of his songs weren't bad, and he influenced a lot of later folk singers.

Wiki:Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (14 June 1909 – 14 April 1995) was an acclaimed American folk music singer, author, and actor.

There's more on him at Wiki (which also has a photo; see link)

Lordy, I feel sorry for you! I grew up when Burl Ives was one of those odd albums people would buy. Hated the stuff then, thank goodness it's not popular now. He's the "Frosty" character of one of those Christmas speacials, I think. He wasn't all that big a whoop, even when he was popular. I think your folks were just messing with you. If they break out a Barry Manilow CD, run as fast as you can!

You know, the world does not begin and end with you and your rude, ignorant friends. Learn to experience something outside the things you know and are comfortable with and you just might find something new you like. In any event, you'd best start learning a little respect otherwise people are going to treat you like a six-year old for the rest of your life.

Yeah, the Snowman on Rudolph. I bet your parents don't think much of your music either. Everyone has different tastes and that's really okay. In the real world there is no such thing as cool.
