Well, it can't be all bad. Look at the cemetary. Everyone is dying to get in. You wanted humor, right?:)

You should read a little basic group of wierd considerations on this topic at: http://home.comcast.net/~vanwyhe/afraid.htm.
First of all, you need to redo your question. I had known many people suffering from gigantic pains or with terminal deseases that really want to day, and many not afraid, since pain of illness has a much heavy wight in theri lives balance.
There is also a natural process in old people that prepares for death. No appetite, no place to go, no family visiting, no one cares, the start feeling like a foeregner in your own home, etc. One day, they assume death as far more interesting, and accept they did all they wanted or needed.
Now, to the basic of your question. There are many cultures where death causes no hard feelings. Old time vikings thought they would reunite with generations of family members in Valhala, and there are currently indians and monks that do not feel aprehensive about dead.
Another thing is we, tv watchers, religious people being made afraid by people who want to sell something to you, be industries. politicians and oportunists. Cant blame them for doing what they their job.
If you go to the raw definitions, you see that the simple idea surrounding death is that nothing is felt, /the end of life; the total and permanent cessation of all the vital functions of an organism/
Catholics for example, shoud be so happy to die, since they will /they say/ meet the Creator... but that is not the real case.
Non believers could be in a worse position if they are not the scientific type.... since you dont know where your going....
Afraid? Why not? If you dont know where your going, and apprehension , dislike, distate are your environment or cultural frame... you will dye or feel that you will dye alone, in pain, in sadness, with no itinerary, etc.
Thousands of years beliving in dying as a horroble thing... well is almost in DNA, right?
I die for not dying in my death
BEING CEASED.... Resignation please! Nothing we can do.

Interesting question... people are afraid of death because they are no longer in control. They , if they don't believe in anything, think that's it , you're just a body in the ground or spread somewhere. That's a scary thought to a lot of people.
People of faith, no matter what their religion or spirituality believe that they will ascend to somewhere and meet their long lost family and friends and God. Other people because of their actions in their lives believe they'll be descending to Hell or somewhere near it.
Because we have no scientific data that is considered measurable by scientists , people don't know what happens after death so they're afraid of dying and not being here anymore.
Until Jesus or someone else comes back and tells us what life after death is like, we'll just have to wonder.

I don't know about you, but I haven't been doing it all the time, I haven't done it once yet...
Try to comprehend what it would be like to experience nothingness, no thought, no sensory perception, no movement.
Does this sound appealing? This may be why some people are afraid of death. I plan on living for the moment myself and enjoy what time I have on this planet.

I don't think it is exactly death that we are afraid of. I believe it is not knowing what is to come. Where we go? What happens to the people around us? What happens after death occurs?
Personally of htinking about this, it's not death that I'm scared of. Death is natural and happens to everyone. It's not knowing what is going to happen once the cycle of life has ended.

Not all people are afraid of death. Some actually desire death. This is not healthy, unless you are in a lot of pain or very ill. The main factor for fear of death is the unknown part of it.

I even as a 50 year old disabled man am petrified of dying. Since I havesuffered renal failure and have been in hospital umpteen times for my kidneys, scepticemia, ecoli and mrsa.
I think that it is that I cannot bare the thought of dying and leaving my wife and kids to cope. I laugh all the time, keep happy and sing when I go to my renal unit at times and tell jokes. I maintain if you keep jolly etc then hopefully my system should keep running longer.
Whenever I am in hospital, all I think of is death, I have to have dialysis for the rest of my life to keep me alive unless a miracle happens.

Why? because the don't like their own life. I thing they are afraid that they made too many bed things in their life and death will stop the time they have to correct them. when you have time , you don't correct your mistakes because you have time to do it. but when you are niar death the time is gone and you are afraid from your life from the person you turn up to be

I think people are afraid that the way they die may be painful or otherwise unpleasent.
Then they fear the unknown-no-one knows for sure what happens when you die, whether there is an afterlife etc.
