Win32 asrupdate.exe is infected. Windows LiveCare did not detect it. It was exposed by a free security scan by
symantec. It can't be removed unless I uninstall LiveCare. What do I do?

Run an anti-virus program (e.g. Norton's).

Don't be too quick to remove the file. It might be a false positive. Security software is sophisticated but they have been known to make mistakes. It is entirely possible that Symantec incorrectly labeled a file as malicious. Run another scan with a different scanner. If this second scanner corroborates the first scan then quarantine the file. There are many online scanners which you can use. Try Trend Micro's Housecall. It is entirely free. It will both scan and remove any malicious files. Here is the link: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

It would be alright to run a scan for just Trojan Horses using Ewido (ka AVG Antispyware) online scanner at: http://www.ewido.net/en/
Look at the upper left hand corner.

If that's really the case, why not unistall LiveCare, get rid of the virus, then download LiveCare again? Symantec is an excellent security source, I would follow their instructions to the letter.

Beware, some companies use what are refered to as false positve as a way of scaring you into using their product. However I would be surprised to find symantec using this but try ad aware se. It is free for personal use and very effective. you can get it at http://www.download.com

was your computer acting up before you did the scan? a lot of these "free" scans claim to come up with a virus that you need to purchase their product to get rid of. i'm sure that if you use another free scan, it will come up with something also. the world evolves because of people who have "sold the farm for peanuts". don't be so gullible. this is how these companies make money. i use avgfree and a couple of others that protect mine's just fine.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.

If the above scan does not fix it. Post the exact name of the virus so we can provide you with a removal tool.
