hI GUYS,
My sons 1994 Ford Fiesta mk3 has sat in my garage for a while as we were waiting for him to pass his driving test. He passed it today, so I booked it bin for an MOT tomorrow, only thing is it wont start.
It wants to run but wont fire up. The battery has gone flat so we used his friends car to boost his battery, he took the plugs out and dried them as they were wet, I got him to heat up the leads incase they were damp. The engine wants to start but wont , as he cranks it over it feels as if its firing but wont run, can anyone help please.

Ps it has been running quite a few times not very long ago, only thing that I worry about is he ran the tank empty, but there again it wants to run, fuel is getting through.

Found the prob it was the spark plugs, weird as we put new plugs in not that long ago , they were cheap plugs though.

the car has hydraulic cam followers that fill with oil when running regularly.
When not run, the oil slowly empties from them making them close slighlty.
This mean that they dont bear fully on the valves ,thus limiting opening.
Solution.tow the car with another vehicle. The cam followers will be forced to fill and the car will start.

ok fiestas are awkward little things when it's cold. remove the distributor cap and thoroughly dry it out.now if this doesn't work, because he ran the fuel down it could mean some muck has got sucked into the carburetter, theres a filter in the fuel line, remove it and clean it out with petrol, ps, then reconnect it.
make sure theres fuel in the tank after you have cleaned the filter and before you try to start the car.
yes it needs a new battery or try charging the old one.
my daughter had a fiesta, it worked well whenever the whole electrical system was sprayed with wd40, always carry some and use it whenever the car wont start as a first option.
good luck, when it's up and running, sell it quickly!

It could be a plugged fuel filter, but because you mentioned wet plugs it's more likely that he's flooding it. On the '94 when starting from cold you should depress the accelerator ONCE to set the automatic choke, then turn the engine over.
If you think you have flooded it, hold the accelerator all the way to floor and keep it there while cranking the engine. Only let up when the car starts and the engine revs.
If he's pulled the plugs out, it's also inexpensive to replace them on a 4 cyl. engine.

Put fuel in it, push it down a hill, or push it along the road.
Let it pick up a reasonable speed as it goes along, turn the ignition lights on, bang it in second and let the clutch out. If it dont start from a bump then theres definately a problem that will need further investigation. Without seeing the car its kinda hard to say what is wrong, because it could be any number of things.

If it really wants to start thats a classic sign of no fuel getting through. Especially if it keeps speeding up it's turn rate but never properly fires. Put 2 cans in the tank, the 2 cans is important as one won't necessarily be enough. I learned this recently with a Volvo S80, spent 2 days trying to start it with the national grid running through, then tried another fiver of petrol in the tank, and it started immediately.

If you are sure that it is getting spart then, It is probably a fuel or fuel delivery problem. Try blowing some starting fluid in the air intake. If it runs on it then that confirms that it is indeed a fuel problem.

Check the fuel pressure. You might want to get you some car gas cleaner and mix it in with your gas. Bad oil will mess with the engine also so check the oil and make sure your not in need of an oil change. DRIVE SAFE !!!!!!!!!

Your gas has gone stale
When leaving gas for a long time you have to add stabilizer to it.
You should drain the tank and add new gas, Syphon it off and add new gas.
If you can't syphon it off, and the tank level is low, Maybe filling it up with new gas might work, but I am not sure
