I tried to get it cashed at his bank and he didn't have the funds in his account. Can I get it cashed somewhere like a store or something? He would still be responsible for the check right?

Call him and tell him you need CASH NOW1 ! Good rule...NEVER accept a personal check from anyone.

You won't be able to get the money right now but you can deposit it into your account and hopefully by the time it reaches his bank the money in his account would be enough to cover the check. Even if the funds are unavailable his bank should cash it and just charge him an overdraft fee. Good luck. Next time take a money order.

Most stores won't cash a third party check. If it did cash the check and it bounced again you would be primarily liable as the first endorser. Yes, ultimately the original payor would be liable, but good luck collecting from an apparent dead beat.

First, his check bounced. You have a claim against him to file charges for passing a bad check. Second, if under $1,000 depends on the state jurisdiction, you can go to small claim court and collect a judgment. With the judgment, you can have the person wages garnished.

Did you try your bank? End result would be his bank going after him for insufficient funds.
