Especially for gold, the best place would be to bury it. Gold has been buried for thousands of years and probably is still the safest place for it. Gold does not tarnish or react in the ground, so a gold coin buried without any protection will look exactly as it did 10,000 years ago.

If you are worried someone could find it with a metal detector, dig a hole, put the gold in, cover with a piece of plywood, then pour some concrete with rebar over it. Anyone with a metal detector will assume the "hit" is coming from the rebar in the concrete. When you dig it up, just dig at an angle to dig under the concrete.

If someone knows you have valuables, any place in your house could be searched, especially locations where a safe could be hidden.

You might think its crazy, but that is how I would hide gold outside a bank.

you can go to one of the home repair stores and buy you a safe. How you install the safe is the next question. In a closet in the bedroom you can cut part of the floor out and then bolt the safe to the floor joists. When mounting this be sure your cut out from the floor is cut neatly and you can reinstall it over the safe , which will conceal it. If you have a slab house you can drill into the concrete and bolt the safe to to the floor. For the money though a safe deposit box at the bank is the best deal. You may also want to get the coins appraised and have them insured if your going to keep them at the house. Hope this helps.

Take an average cardboard box and make a false bottom for it. Put the coins in the bottom, the false bottom in and then fill it with sort of heavy objects, like books or magazines. Put it in the closet in the corner and no one is the wiser.

Have the coins valued by a respectable dealer. Then have the coins insured for that amount. If anything happens to the coins, you're covered.

Really the best place is a safety deposit box but if not buy a safe. Or place them in the bottom of your curtains.
