Close our bases and bring our people home. We would have to do this in phases as we could not integrate this many people back into society. Many of our soldiers are blue collar types and the kind of jobs that they could fill have been pretty much sent overseas. If we just closed them down we would really have massive unemployment. As some point this is going to happen as we are going broke maintaining our armed forces in something like 150 countries. To answer your question about people defending themselves - its not about that nor is it about promoting democracy. Its about projecting power and forcing people to do business to our benefit. Its always been about that. Are our lives cheaper? The answer is yes but not in the way you may think. It is cheaper for those in power to send your kids to fight while they put their kids through grad school to get big bonus Wall Street jobs that are only about pushing money from one place to another. We are becoming a country that produces less and less. Our armies need to disengage and stop providing people with excuses to attack us. We do business with however has the best price and not get involved with their ideology or politics. If someone attacks us, we punish them swiftly and completely with everything we have. This gets harder as nation states wither away. This is not going to happen too soon but it will. The economics of it all will soon take over. Our government is bankrupting us the same exact way that Rome's emperors did to the Roman Empire. It won't be any different. The barbarians are already at the gate. Take away what feeds them and they will go away. Watch the Chinese for clues. They are becoming the next super power. What are they building? Aircraft carriers, laser beams that blow up satellites, and high-tech fighters. Why? To project power and they can now do it much cheaper than us. Watch Russia too as with their newly discovered mineral wealth being exploited they are becoming rich while we're bogged down with environmental regulations and red tape. Its all very sad to watch but it is the inevitable cycle of life.

Shut 'em down. The only reason we gots overseas bases is to try to control and direct all the world's oil supply in our direction. We're like a huge ol' hog ravenously suckin' on a big oily teat and wallowing in our own greasy offal!

overseas bases are not to defend indigenous peoples ... they are strategic assets ... no, i dont think we should open more i think we should work on our foreign policy to make friends with those we consider threats .... but i think the current agenda is to gradually get more bases in and around China because the US political thinkers see them as a huge future threat ...
