Ok what I am asking here is this...my dad's grandma was part Shawnee and my mom's great grandma was part Cherokee. I was born here, and I have aboriginal ancestry, how do I go about being recognized an native american indian.

Well i'm Onondaga (Iroquois nation) and you have to prove that your at least 50% Native to be put on their rolls (recognised as a tribe member) and if this is true for all tribes it seems that you don't fit the criteria.

Know what tribe, know your people, and if you are able enroll well there ya go... But if your percentage is too low, and the fact that you probably did not grow up in and are connected to the culture, you may not be able to obtain this.

Though some of us just have to 'deal' with knowing the heritage is in the family...if can't have the 'official' status, well knowing about it is better then having a card any old day.

To be a native American does one not have to be a red Indian.

Natives were born here so if youre foreign you wont ever be a native....green cards can be obtained but you need help from a lawyer.. Its not easy at all.

If you are and can prove you are 1/8th native american (or more) you can apply to the Tribal Council of your heritage and you are then given your 'tribal number'.

I think your birth certificate will serve as your "card" if you were born in America.
