Having a patent is having an intellectual property.

What do you expect of a property. We do expect it to appreciate and prosper and fetch us something in return.

We are growing in number, population wise.
Therefore there is necessity for some discipline among the business community. This is only to avoid clashes amongst ourselves.

Patenting is a new born law. It is a developing law trying to adapt itself into the present scenario and to cater to our needs in the future.

As far as the tussles between the companies; there is fighting everywhere when there is a valuable property at stake.

And who knows you may invent something or your descendants may do so. Therefore be positive for the change and adapt yourself to the new trends.

A patent protects your rights as an owner of a unique product or process (there maybe more things you can patent). It gives the inventor a specific amount of time to sell, market, or use his/her idea without competition. Why would you want one? Think what would happen if you invented something ingenious and the minute you put it on the market, someone buys it, copies it exactly and sells it cheaper than you do. That is all YOUR work and money gone to formulate your product only to have someone steal it and sell it from under you.

Most products you see these days say Patent Pend. meaning that they intend to protect their rights, but do not yet have a patent issued on it. It is as good as a patent though on the effect it has on copycats.

The concept of the patent was developed to promote innovation. If you invest in creating a new product or method the government will in exchange grant you exclusive rights to commercialize your product or method in effect creating a legal monopoly for you for a given amount of time, 20 years. After that time anybody can use your idea.

That is why patents were created to promote innovation. So, yes, it is a good thing.

Patenting allows the inventor to commercialise the technology.. It is what which helps the inventor to recover the cost of his investment in R&D for the invention.. It is really useful for individuals.. But the individuals usually do it for a company.. and thus starts the warfare u talked of..

It also depends on the country you live and and the financial muscle u have.. If its in India, the invention is easily copied.. so its of no use.. In US u can get compensation for patent infringement.. but u will need money to feed the attorneys..
