x^2 is x squared. I didn't know how else to write it out.

The man is 43 years old in 1849 making his birth date 1806.

age x= year x^2 The square root of 1849 is 43 years which puts his birthday within the first half of the 19th century. 1849 is the only date with a perfect square until the date 1936 when the age would be 44, but then the man's birth date would not be in the first half of the 19th century. If the man's age were 42 then that would be in the year 1764 which is definitely not going to make his birth date in the first half of the nineteenth century.

I used a "guess and check" method because I could not figure out a formula to use.

He is 43 years old and was born in 1806. The current year he was living in would be 1849, which is 43^2.

This is the only possibility for someone living in the nineteenth century, because, for this question, a person who was 42 years old would be living in 1764.
Likewise, for this question, a person who was 44 years old would be living in 1936.

19th century indicated the 1800's, so I just started squaring numbers until I found the ONLY one that landed in the 1800's.

It took me and my dad about half an hour to work this one out...and my dad is a maths whizz. But we worked out that the answer is
The man is born in the year 1849.
I repeat that the man is born in the Year 1849.
Extra info is that the man is 43 years old.
