Work in what way? Socialism "works" in Europe, in that it functions without a government or economic collapse.
It is already "working" in the U.S. in many forms (Social Security, welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, perscription drug plan, minimum wage, OSHA, EPA, etc.). If by working you mean that it functions and has not yet collapsed.
For most of my life, I believed it would never be fully embraced by Americans. Socialism is nothing more than a fancy word for slavery, and I thought that Americans valued their freedom too much to embrace it. However, in all 29 years of my life, the federal government has grown and we have continued to vote for more and more socialism.
Sadly, I believe complete socialism in the U.S. is only a matter of time. The uneducated, slavery loving socialists will only grow in number and the freedom loving minority will not have the votes to prevent it. We will end up just like Europe where the state controls everything, individuals are just serfs, and the "American Dream" will be a long forgotten idea. The "Land of the Free" is dying, I never thought I'd see the day when people would not care about that.

What I have learned in this forum is that socialism will not work, even a moderated version that could improve the lives of EVERYONE in the country, because of ignorance and lack of education. People don't understand socialism and its applications, and therefore, fear it.
I have read, time and time again, that people in America do not feel responsible and do not want to help out those less fortunate in their own country. They don't want anyone dipping into their pockets to help others. The don't want Universal Healthcare because they think it will diminish the quality of care and create long waits for service. Again, ignorance.
I am a capitalist, through and through. But I still recognize the necessity of available healthcare for all. Just as education must be available to all. How in the world can you consider yourself the greatest nation in the world if you do not have compassion for your fellow countrymen? If you are not willing to share in the burden to ensure the health of your country?
Socialism is misunderstood - plain and simple. And until it is introduced, in a moderate format and embraced by all - it will continue to be feared as a communist regime designed at stealing the freedoms and rights of individuals.

Well you see, no one type of Government really works.
Even the so call freedom of democracy could fail at any moment.
The problem is really the people you put in charge.
On the one-side you have people (Republicans) who want to tell you what you can and can not do, without making any new laws.
Then you have the other-side (Democrats) who tell you that, you can do what ever you want, then make ridiculous laws so you can't do anything.
Now the the thing is we know without a doubt that Socialism doesn't work.
And we also know that the Democrats lean more toward Socialism.
Where as Republicans lean more toward a Republic.
I think I like the Republic way of thinking then the socialist.

Socialism has failed in every country its been tried in. It doesn't work, period. I can't understand why so many people insist on trying to force a proven failure on us.
