there should be a small probe wire that goes into the flame of the pilot light. this heat sensor tells the funace that the piot is lit. if the probe is missing or not working the furnace will shut the gas off after a few minutes thinking that the pilot is out.

The bimetal switch or flame sensor probably needs to be replaced. Since you know where the pilot light is, it should be easy to find a small bulb about the diameter of a pencil, 1 1/2" to 2" long, silver, with a stiff line running from it to some other part of the furnace.

if it is electronic ignition there is usually not a pilot unless you are dealing with a very large furnace.
In most cases the ignition modules have a light on them that will tell you why it has gone into lockout. If you have to turn it off and back on to get it to work it has gone into lockout for safety. If it has a light and it blinks a code it would help to know what the module is finding fault with to answer your question. The brand of furnace would be helpful as well.

Call the company that did the repairs and ask them to check the unit due to onngoing problems. They should have some type of warranty on their work.
