You can prime them and paint them but it will still look a little bit country. If you don't mind the work, you can actually take them off the walls. Problem is what's underneath them. You may have to do a lot of plastering and sanding or you may even have to drywall! If you decide to go this route, you may want to hire a handyman. Once everything is sanded and plastered then you can paint the walls like you normally would. Good luck!

I had the same problem recently when I moved into a 70's home.
I had some choices.
1. Prep them for painting and just paint over them. They really add a certain charm even with the lines from the paneling.
2. If you dont like the lines, just spackle in the grooves and smooth out nicely before you paint.
3. Wallpaper over them. If you want this method there is a product that you use to cover the walls before you paper them.
4. There is a product that you paint on to give it a "textured" look and feel. I did not care for this method, because if I changed my mind, it would be hard to remove!
5. My choice was to put up a chair rail to match the lower 1/2 of paneling, and I wallpapered the upper half only. It was beautiful and I got a lot of compliments on it. Good luck!

I am not sure what kind of "wood panel" walls you mean. Are they the cheap sheets of panelling? If so, you could try to carefully remove one and see what is behind it. In our older farmhouse, there were those cheap panels, which we pulled down. They had been tacked into plaster walls causing damage everywhere. After finding out the huge cost of re-plastering, we had someone come in and put a layer of sheet rock mud over the walls after filling holes. We have the benefit of the coolness of plaster in the summer.
If the walls are solid wood, they are valuable. If they have not been painted and are finished wood, you should keep it that way. There are ways to cover those walls. It would be better to have a professional help you in that case.

I too moved into an older home ...and what i did to mask the wood paneling was paint them...it completely changed the look of the home and actually made the walls look really cool and textured instead of like a plain ole painted wall. Then you can decorate however you want too with no worries...guaranteed to make your home look larger as well. Hope that helps!!!Good Luck!

You didn't say if you are renting or did you purchase the house. If you bought it, you could take down the paneling and see what's behind it and start from there. Or you could prime and paint the paneling. Or if its solid wood and not a thin panel you could sheet rock right over it without any problem.
If it is 1/2" thick or thicker it should hold a picture of less than 30 lbs alright.

if the wood panels are in good shape and put on right, paint them any colour you want. prime it first, with doing so, you will find all the imperfections and then you can fill in with wood fill. sand down a little and your good to go. if you don't like the wood at all, try to find out whats behind it. chances are you would want to do this as well, because it might not be insulated properly. if that happens, take it down and insulate and vapour vary it and drywall. Have fun, renovating when you live in it, is a pain the ***. but then again it looks great when you are done!!!:)

if it is real knotty pine panels and not the cheap paneling then please DO NOT PAINT THEM! you could sand them down and re-stain them a different color to match your decor. or if it is something you really don't like then carefully remove them and have drywall put up instead. someone will be more than happy to buy old knotty pine panels. or possibly cover with nice fabric panels. yes you can hang art work

Paint over them.
I had ugly dark 70's wood veneer paneling all in the living room...
I painted over in a nice biege, and it looks great with the vertical lines and the wood grain.
